What is prp?
- Your blood is mainly made up from plasma however it also contains components such as red cells, white cells, and platelets. Platelets contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors, which are essential for the healing process.
- Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is plasma with much higher concentration of platelets than is typically found in blood. Therefore, the concentration of growth factors are far greater than usual.
What Condition is it used for?
- Platelet rich plasma injections can be used in the treatment of arthritis, cartilage and tendon injuries. It can facilitate cartilage growth; help remodel and heal tears.
Procedure
- Platelet rich plasma is prepared from the patient’s own blood which has been processed to concentrate the platelets. The entire process requires approximately 30 minutes. 10-15 mls of blood will be withdrawn from your arm. This blood is then processed in a special double syringe and centrifuged. The plasma is filtered into the second syringe. After sterile preparation of the area, 4-5mls of PRP is injected into the knee joint.
Preparation
- If you are planning to have a PRP injection, it is recommended that you cease the use of any nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as Nurofen, Voltaren or Mobic three days prior to the injection. You will also need to refrain from taking these medications for three days after the injection.
- It is important to be well hydrated and avoid caffeine prior to the procedure.
- Bring someone with you to drive after the procedure as you may experience discomfort that prevents you from driving.
Side effects
- Adverse effects are rare as we are re-injecting your own blood. Any injection carries a small risk of introducing infection however we take precautions to minimise this risk.
- It is usual that you may feel some pain during and following the injection. Should you require pain relief it is recommended to take Panadol. Some swelling or discomfort is common in the first few days. Compression and the use of an icepack is recommended.
- If you experience severe, persisting pain or an have adverse reaction following the injection such as fever or redness at the injection site, please advise our medical team on 08 89416677.
