Bone Health & Falls Exercise Physiology
Maintaining muscle strength, balance and bone health becomes increasingly important as we age. Osteopenia, osteoporosis, reduced balance and age-related loss of strength can increase the difficulty of everyday activities and contribute to an increased risk of falls.
At Territory Sportsmedicine, our Exercise Physiologists provide individually prescribed exercise designed to improve strength, balance, mobility and physical confidence.
Exercise for Bone Health:
Exercise programs may include:
- Progressive Resistance Training: Strengthening major muscle groups to improve overall physical capacity.
- Weight-bearing Exercise: Appropriate weight-bearing activities may be incorporated to support bone health.
- Balance Training: Exercises are selected and progressed to challenge balance safely.
- Functional Strength: Training movements required for everyday activities such as standing from a chair, climbing stairs, walking and carrying objects.
- Postural & Mobility Exercise: Where appropriate, exercises may address mobility and the physical demands of everyday movement.
Reducing Falls Risk:
For people with reduced balance or a history of falls, we assess the physical factors that may contribute to falls risk and develop an appropriate exercise program.
This may include balance, lower limb strength, walking capacity, coordination and functional exercises that replicate everyday activities.
A Collaborative Approach:
Where osteoporosis, previous fractures, significant falls risk or other medical conditions are present, our Exercise Physiologists can work alongside your GP, specialist, Sports & Exercise Physician or Physiotherapist to ensure exercise is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
Stay Strong, Mobile & Independent:
Our goal is to help you maintain the strength and confidence required to remain active and independent. Whether you have osteoporosis, have experienced a fall or simply feel that your balance and strength are declining, an individually prescribed exercise program can provide a structured way forward.
