Disability, Work & Functional Exercise Physiology
Living with disability, reduced mobility or prolonged deconditioning can make everyday activities more physically demanding. Similarly, after an injury or extended absence from work, there may be a considerable gap between being medically recovered and being physically ready to meet the demands of a job.
At Territory Sportsmedicine, Exercise Physiology focuses on improving the physical capacity required for everyday life, independence, community participation and work.
Exercise for Disability & Reduced Mobility:
Programs are designed around the individual's abilities and goals rather than following a standard exercise routine.
Exercise may focus on:
- Strength and muscular endurance
- Balance and mobility
- Cardiovascular fitness
- Functional movement
- Transfers and everyday physical tasks
- General conditioning
- Building confidence with regular physical activity
Exercises can be modified to accommodate mobility limitations and different levels of physical ability.
Workplace Rehabilitation & Return to Work:
Returning to work may require specific levels of lifting, carrying, walking, standing, climbing, pushing, pulling or general endurance.
Our Exercise Physiologists can progressively condition an individual towards these physical demands.
Programs may include:
- Job-specific strengthening
- Functional lifting and carrying
- Work-related endurance
- Cardiovascular conditioning
- Progressive exposure to physical work tasks
- General reconditioning following prolonged absence from work
Measuring Progress:
Where appropriate, functional and physical capacity can be reassessed throughout rehabilitation to help guide exercise progression and demonstrate improvements in strength, endurance and work capacity.
Working Together:
Exercise Physiologists may work alongside Physiotherapists, Sports & Exercise Physicians, employers, rehabilitation providers and other treating professionals to support a coordinated rehabilitation pathway.
Exercise Built Around What You Need to Do:
Our focus is practical: identifying the activities that are important to you and progressively developing the physical capacity required to perform them.
Whether the goal is greater independence, improved mobility, returning to work or simply becoming stronger and more active, we develop exercise around your individual function and goals.
