Respiratory & Renal Exercise Physiology
Chronic respiratory and kidney conditions can make physical activity increasingly difficult. Breathlessness, fatigue, reduced muscle strength and periods of illness or inactivity may contribute to a gradual decline in physical capacity.
At Territory Sportsmedicine, our Exercise Physiologists provide carefully prescribed and monitored exercise for people with chronic respiratory or renal conditions where exercise is clinically appropriate.
Building Exercise Capacity Safely:
Your Exercise Physiologist will consider your medical history, symptoms, current physical capacity and any recommendations from your treating medical team before developing your program.
Exercise may include:
- Aerobic conditioning
- Progressive resistance training
- Lower limb strengthening
- Functional exercise
- Graded walking or cycling
- Mobility exercises
- Strategies for gradually increasing regular physical activity
Exercise intensity is adjusted according to the individual and progressed as capacity improves.
Conditions We May Assist With:
Exercise Physiology may assist people living with:
- COPD
- Other chronic respiratory conditions
- Chronic kidney disease
- Reduced exercise tolerance associated with chronic illness
- General deconditioning following illness or hospitalisation
Exercise That Works With Your Medical Management:
For people with more complex respiratory or renal conditions, communication with the treating GP, specialist or other healthcare providers may form an important part of exercise planning.
Our multidisciplinary environment also provides access to Sports & Exercise Physicians and Physiotherapists when additional clinical input is required.
Improving Confidence With Physical Activity:
Breathlessness, fatigue or long periods of inactivity can make people understandably cautious about exercise.
Our role is to provide an appropriate starting point and progressively build strength and exercise tolerance so that physical activity becomes more manageable, structured and sustainable.
